American Legion Post 735, Hiawatha, Iowa

Avenue of Flags

Thank you to all the participants in Avenue of Flags for 2023. It was a record year for number of participants and number of flags (893 total flags). Your support not helps the Hiawatha Legion Post 735, but ensures the city of Hiawatha partiotically festive each holiday. Thank you! Let your neighbors know about this program and how they can help celebrate these National holidays just like you.

The Avenue of Flags is an American Legion Post 735 sponsored program to promote patriotism in the City of Hiawatha. Flags are often put out on five (5) patriotic holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

Post 735 installs a metal flag holder near your curb (installed low enough not to interfere with mowing/trimming and also not a trip hazard). The Post paints a small white marker on the city curb directly in front of the holder (these marks have the approval of the city). On the designated holidays, Post members and volunteers (Boy Scouts, HFD, Lions Club, youth program members, etc.) will install and retrieve flags.

For 2024, the cost of the annual subcription remains unchanged at $40.00 for a flag and a second flag for an additional $25.00.

A common question is, "What does the Post do with the money raised from the Avenue of Flags?" Post 735 actively supports an array of youth activities with these funds, ranging from youth t-ball, mock trial teams, Oratorical contests, American Legion Baseball teams, and essay contests, as well as other activities as they are brough forward by community members.
